Start Using Your Website

Now that you have your website up and running, make sure you keep it up to date by adding new content as often as you can.

Step 1. Learn how to update your website

Using WordPress is relatively straight forward. The main things you will want/need to know are:

How to add a New Page
How to add a Post
What’s the difference between Pages and Posts?

Step 2. Get people to your website

Now that you have a website, you want people to visit it. Here’s a quick list of things you could do to make people aware of your website.

  • Add the website address to your email signature.
  • Add the website address to your print material. So your business card, letterhead, brochures etc.
  • Add the website address to your vehicle if appropriate.
  • Send out a newsletter or client update and announce the website.
  • Ask your suppliers or partners to add a link to your website from theirs. You could return the favour!
  • Consider using social media for your business and linking posts or comments back to your website.

Step 3. Have a plan for keeping your website up-to-date

As a business owner myself I know how hard it is to keep on top of marketing. The thing I find that works for me is taking a couple of hours at the beginning of the year, be it January or the start of the financial year, and making a plan in regards to my marketing. Your plan can be as simple or complex as you like. I prefer simple and achievable.

Where to start?

  1. How often will you update/add to your website or write a blog post?
The biggest thing is to be consistent! If you choose to do something weekly, monthly or bimonthly, do it. So in your planning be realistic about what you can achieve and when. Also consider what is appropriate for your customers or target market.
  2. What will you write about?
Perhaps you are working on an exciting project that your customers may be interested in. Tell them about it once the project is finished and include before and after photos to show them. Or maybe you’re selling homewares online and Spring is coming. Write a blog post with Spring Cleaning tips and link back to your website with storage ideas that people can purchase.
  3. Diarise your plan – either in Outlook or your calendar.
After all the effort you put into the planning and writing you want to make sure you don’t forget to keep up with it.
Or if you’re SUPER organised, you could write all your blog posts or new website pages now and schedule them to publish to your site on a determined day. Easy!

There you have it, just a few ideas on how to get the most out of your website!
